The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the ACLU of Maryland filed suit against the Baltimore Police Department over the aerial surveillance program approved by the city’s financial board April 1 in a divided vote.

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, a Democrat, has eliminated the Cybersecurity Officer position from her cabinet. Unlike most states, which are pouring additional funding into cybersecurity, Raimondo has cut all funding from the Cybersecurity Officer’s role, which was held by Mike Steinmetz since the position was created in 2017.  The Cybersecurity Officer functions will be distributed among other state agencies, according to a published report.

The City of San Francisco became the first city in the United States to ban law enforcement, as well as other city agencies, from using facial recognition technologies when its Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved the Stop Secret Surveillance Ordinance.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio appointed John Paul Farmer as the city’s new Chief Technology Officer on April 23. Farmer’s first day in the role will be June 3.

As part of its push towards open data, the City of Chicago published comprehensive data on Transportation Network Providers (TNP) – commonly known as ride-hailing companies – on April 12.

The City of Atlanta announced the formation of the Chief Information Officer Advisory Board on April 17. The new board will “work with the City of Atlanta Information Management team to advance the technology strategy of the city,” according to the city.
