Morgan State University has hired Timothy Summers as chief information officer (CIO) and vice president of information technology at the Baltimore-based historically black research university.

Summers’ first day on the new job – which includes heading up the university’s Division of Information Technology – is set for March 26.

He will succeed Cynthia Mendoza, who has been the interim CIO since 2023.

Summers comes to Morgan State from Arizona State University (ASU), where he was executive director of cloud and advanced network engineering services.

He also directed ASU’s Next Lab innovation hub – with a focus on advancements in artificial intelligence, extended reality, and Web3 technologies – and created the ASU Pocket digital credentials ecosystem,

Summers will tackle an extensive agenda at Morgan State, including leading initiatives to optimize university IT operations, modernize enterprise systems, improve cybersecurity and data security, and create and implement a strategic IT plan.

“It is an incredible honor to join one of the most respected Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the country,” Summers said.

My mission is simple: amplify what’s great, push beyond expectations, and make sure our technology isn’t just keeping up with the future – it’s defining it,” he said, emphasizing, “We’re not here to follow trends; we’re here to set them.”
