Florida Atlantic University (FAU) launched a quantum computing certificate program aimed at helping business and technology leaders evaluate the emerging technology, develop sourcing strategies, and prepare for its cybersecurity and governance implications.

The eight-week “Quantum Computing: Business and Sourcing Strategy” course is offered through Florida Atlantic’s Executive Education program in the College of Business. The course began Aug. 24 and runs through Oct. 12, with seven Monday sessions available on campus or live virtually.

According to the university’s press release, the certificate is designed for business leaders, technology professionals, and other decision-makers who want to understand quantum computing without requiring a technical background in quantum science.

“FAU’s decision to launch this course reflects a convergence of several important trends, including the growth of high-tech industries in South Florida and the university’s commitment to preparing business leaders for emerging technologies that will shape the future economy,” said Daniel Gropper, dean of Florida Atlantic’s College of Business and Kaye Family Professor.

The program covers quantum computing fundamentals, cloud-based quantum platforms, technology sourcing, artificial intelligence governance, cybersecurity, contract management, and enterprise risk. Participants will also examine post-quantum cryptography and regulatory considerations and gain hands-on experience with quantum computing environments through guided laboratory exercises.

“Quantum computing represents a significant evolution in how we think about technology and problem-solving, and this program gives professionals the opportunity to better understand its potential, evaluate its business applications and explore how organizations can strategically prepare for what comes next,” Gropper said.

The university said the program is intended for a range of technology and business professionals, including chief information officers, chief technology officers, chief information security officers, IT directors, procurement officials, cybersecurity professionals, enterprise architects, and executives responsible for technology investments. No programming or physics background is required.

Participants will also assess technology providers and quantum-as-a-service offerings, including procurement approaches, vendor selection, pricing models, and longer-term sourcing considerations. The course examines potential applications in finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, supply chains, pharmaceuticals, energy, and artificial intelligence.

“Business leaders do not need to become quantum engineers, but they do need the ability to recognize where transformative technologies may create opportunities or risks for their organizations,” said Mehran Basiratmand, director of innovation and programs in Florida Atlantic’s Department of Information Technology and Operations Management.

“Through case studies, industry examples, and hands-on exposure to emerging quantum platforms, this course gives professionals the foundation to ask the right questions and make more informed technology decisions,” Basiratmand added.

The certificate builds on Florida Atlantic’s broader investment in quantum computing. In January, the university announced an agreement with D-Wave Quantum Inc. to acquire and install an Advantage2 annealing quantum computer at its Boca Raton campus, making Florida Atlantic the first university in Florida to publicly host a large, dedicated quantum computer on site.

The university said the system is expected to support academic research, student training, workforce development, and applied research in areas including logistics, transportation, finance, and materials discovery. Its deployment is expected later in 2026.
