The U.S News Honor Roll this month released its 20 best hospitals list–revamped for 2016-2017 to take both the national rankings and the procedure and condition ratings into account. Hospitals receive points if they are nationally ranked in one of 16 specialties, with more points awarded for higher rankings. They also received points for how many ratings of “high performing” they earned across nine procedures and conditions.

The top 20 are:

  • Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.
  • Cleveland Clinic
  • Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston
  • Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore
  • UCLA Medical Center
  • New York-Presbyterian University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell
  • UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco
  • Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Chicago
  • Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian, Philadelphia
  • NYU Langone Medical Center, New York
  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University, St. Louis
  • UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside, Pittsburgh
  • Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston
  • Stanford Health Care-Stanford Hospital, Stanford, Calif.
  • Mount Sinai Hospital, New York
  • Duke University Hospital, Durham, N.C.
  • Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
  • University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers, Ann Arbor
  • Houston Methodist Hospital
  • University of Colorado Hospital, Aurora

Of these 20 hospitals, 19 use Epic Systems. Epic provides software for health care organizations centered on electronic medical records management; clinical systems; systems for lab technologists, pharmacists, and radiologists; and billing systems. They claim 190 million patients currently have an electronic record in Epic software.
